The Surf were originally spawned by the Athens, Georgia, music scene,
but have long since scattered to the four winds, coming together when
the music calls to create a sound that is at once distinctive and
familiar. Comparisons to the Police, U2, and R.E.M. aside, the Surf
sound nothing like their name, relying on dueling guitars, two lead
singers, and a willingness to experiment to craft songs that are meticulous
and imaginative, veering from all-out U2-style rockers to experimental
instrumentals.
Individually, guitarist and lead singer and songwriter John Pehrson
has also played in a band called His Boy Elroy that established an
enthusiastic following in Atlanta. His expressive vocal range is integral
to creating The Surf sound.
Drummer J.B. Hopkins has played with a veritable Who’s Who
of Athens musicians, including Vic Chesnut and the late great band
Black Cop, of which he was briefly a member. Later, J.B. moved to
Richmond, Virginia, and recruited local musicians for the band that
would become Cathedral Itch, who recorded their all-original, eponymous
CD at the Richmond recording studio owned by Cracker’s David
Lowry.
Keyboardist Jack Barr is perhaps the most versatile and accomplished
musician in the group. He has played in a series of successful country
and Christian bands, giving him the time and means to indulge his
real passion: restoring old log cabins in and around his native Carrollton,
Georgia. Jack's unique vocal and musical style is a key element in
the Surf sound.
Guitarist Stephen Blackburn is a prolific songwriter who in addition
to his work with The Surf also releases material through his on-man-band,
The Virtual Penguins. He is the organizational force behind The Surf,
in addition to handling engineering and producing duties Surf projects.
Mark Maloney other group, M80, are a high-energy power pop band in
the tradition of Cheap Trick and The Smithereens. They have two albums
to their credit, and can often be seen gigging in and around their
Atlant home a. Mark also produced the Indie Amplier cable television
show, which helped discover and promote local Atlanta artists.
