Scott Brookman has been writing and recording tuneful pop songs since
the mid-80’s, when he wrote many of the songs performed by the
well-received regional band, The Apes of Wrath. At around the same
time he began recording home demos on a variety of 4-track recorders,
discovering that he could improvise harmony with himself.
The so-called “home taping” movement accepted him and
Scott began sharing music with a larger group of listeners, issuing
6-8 tape releases from the end of the 80’s through the mid 90’s.
As the 90’s ended, Twee Kitten Records from California released
his album For Those Who Like POP. Not only did it sell well,
but it was picked up for reissue in Japan by Vroom-Sound. Music from
the CD was used extensively in the PBS kids show, Dragonfly TV.
There were flattering reviews in underground ‘zines, a few larger
circulation magazines and even Japan’s Beikoku-Ungaku.
Somewhere along the line Scott wrote an original song used in the
film Golfballs. There is finally a new release entitled A
Song for Me, A Song for You which features 14 tracks in styles
ranging from bossa nova to jazz/rock to Beatle-esque. Brookman describes
his music as an outgrowth of '60s and '70s styles enhanced by modern
recording technologies.
“It’s recycling in a good way, a fun way. You still have
to know all the music stuff,” Brookman says of his approach,
which he readily asserts is rooted in “classic styles, but with
a new spring to them. Pop music is free, it incorporates almost anything.
The melody is really the thing.”
